Benghazi, Libya – Freedom and Culture

A year after the overthrow of Gadaffi, I travelled to Benghazi to find out how peoples’ lives were changing and found that cultural and artistic expression were flourishing. Football has a significant history in Benghazi and its relationship with the Gadaffi regime is revealing of why the Libyan Revolution began in this city. The radio documentary details how the Al Ahly football team were treated by the dictator and his son. I also follow ‘Guys Underground’ the guitar group who have been enjoying considerable success in the new Libya. But there were also forboding signs for the future – security concerns and the rise of Islamic militancy.
